研究概要

分子の一端にピロリル基、他端にトリクロロシリル基、中央部に炭化水素基を持つ長鎖分子PNNを合成した。ピロリル基は電解酸化重合により共役結合を形成するため、トリクロロシリル基は水素基のような活性水素を持つ基板表面に分子を化学吸着させるため、炭化水素基は基板に対する電気絶縁性向上のために導入した。

化学吸着単分子膜（CA膜）は、2つの平行したギャップ2ｍｍのPt電極が形成されたガラス板上にPNNを用いて作製した。吸着されたPNN分子は、基板表面に化学結合している。単分子膜が形成されたことは外部多重反射赤外分光法（MER-IR）によって確認した。CA法と配向法は既に報告されており、 CA法を用いれば水素基のような活性水素を含む基板表面に単分子膜を形成できることが実証されている。

次に、純水中で室温で2つのPt電極間に直流電圧10Ｖを印加して、電解酸化重合をほぼ3時間行った。M.Satohらは電気化学重合を種々の電解質を用いて水溶液中で行っているが、電解酸化重合時に電解質がドープされることを避けるため、実験は超純水中で行った。電解酸化時の電流は電解酸化重合時間が3 時間に至るまで、0mAから約30mAまで徐々に増加した。電極幅は50ｍｍ、共役結合部の厚みは約0.2ｍｍなので、電導度は最大電流値30mAのとき、約103Ｓ／ｃｍとなる。なお、電界はPt電極の長手方向に対して垂直に印加されるので、電解酸化重合が進行しているなら、電気伝導に寄与するポリピロリル基の共役結合は、基板上で＋電極から－電極方向に自己組織的に成長すると考えられる。

電極間の吸着された分子が部分的に重合し、電気的な通路が2つの電極間を接続するように形成されると考え、AFM/STMを用いた電気的な通路探しと、その場所での電導度測定を行った。AFM/STMを用いると、形状像と電流像を同時に、且つ同じ場所で測定可能なことが報告されている。さらに、基板上の PNN分子の分子占有面積を約0.05ｎｍ２と見積もり、Pt電極とチップ間の測定域すべてのPNN分子が電極に対して垂直方向、すなわち電界重合時の電界方向に重合していたとするならば、Pt電極とAuで覆われたチップ間を結ぶ共有結合鎖の最大数はおよそ1000本になる。このとき、共有結合鎖1本あたりの電流値は0.1ｎＡとなる。しかし、実際には、電流値が100ｎＡを超えて大きく振り切っていたこと、さらに1000本全てが、Pt電極とチップ間を接続していたとは考えにくいため、共役結合鎖1本当たりその数倍～数千倍の電流が流れていた可能性もある。ここでは、PNN単分子膜内の電気伝導に寄与する分子導線（共有結合を含むポリピロリル基）を模式的に分子レベルまで拡大して示している。
