国際社会における現代英語の研究

研究概要

新しい世紀を迎えた今日、世界には様々な英語の変種（varieties）がある。本研究の目的は、英語の変種のひとつである英国英語の現在の姿を社会言語学的あるいはCorpus Linguisticsの視座から考察することにより、英国英語の現在の有り様を明らかにし、この英語が他の英語の変種といかなる関係にあるか、さらには、変種の総体としての英語がInternetなどITの普及とともに事実上borderlessになっている国際社会においてどのような機能を担えるかということを明らかにすることである。これを共通のテーマに、各分担者は以下に挙げる細分化された個人的なテーマに基づいて下に記すような研究成果を上げた。

• 菅山　謙正　　研究題目：｢Estuary　Englishとは何か、その発生の過程｣

  標準英国英語（Received Pronunciation, RP)に抗して英国で最近台頭してきているEstuary English（EE)はどのようなものであるか、RPとはどのように違うか、また、このEEはどのような社会的背景の中から出現してきたかなどの問題に以下のような答えを出した。

  EEは近い将来RPに完全に取って替わる可能性がある。完全に取って替わらないまでも、標準語としてのRPの位置に大きな影響を与えていることは確かであり、このことは既に起こり始めている。では、どうしてEEがこのように広がるのであろうか。本研究では、Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, EssexなどLondonを取り囲む、いわゆるHome Countiesに住む若者達が、地域の訛りではなく、あえてこのEEを話す傾向にあるのは、EEには彼らの住む町にはない都会（London）的な響きがあり、これを話すことによって、両者の間には空間的な隔たりはあるものの、自分達が同世代の都会に住む若者と共通の文化を分かち合っていること ('street cred')を示したいという意識の表れではないかという結論に達した。

  このテーマの成果はその一部を第29回神戸市外国語大学市民講座（2001年10月12日）で、「イギリス英語への誘い―Estuary English（河口域英語）の台頭と英国社会の変化―」と題して口頭発表した。

• 村田　純一　　研究題目：｢Corpus Linguisticsを利用したLGSWEの批判的検討｣

  英語学者D. Biberなどによって刊行されたLongman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (LGSWE, 1999)は、はたして現代英国英語あるいは現代英語の在り様を正しく映し出しているかどうかをコーパス言語学の立場から検証した。

  この研究はcorpusに基づいて記述されたLGSWEに代表される文法記述の問題点を指摘している。このような手法を用いて文法記述をした場合、重要であるのは、corpus内に現われるtype/tokenの頻度数をどのように扱うかという問題である。この研究は、例えば、英語形容詞の限定用法／叙述用法のパターンをひとつのcorpusにおけるtype/tokenの数によって決めることは危険であることを主張する。type/tokenの頻度数が持つ意味、小規模corpusにおける頻度数を如何に処理するかなどの問題を考慮すべきと警告する。

  この研究成果の一部は論文「辞書記述におけるコンピュータコーパスの扱い」（『神戸外大論叢』52巻2号(2001年9月)）に掲載されている。

• 瀬良　晴子　　研究題目：｢報道英語における視点とモダリティ｣

  新聞や雑誌などのメディア、特に報道記事は、表面的には中立の姿勢をしているように見える。しかし実際は、それぞれのメディアの視点が表れているも のである。視点を表す言語的要素には様々なものがあるが、本研究では特にmodal verbsと報道英語の視点の問題を考察した。

  研究の一部は第22回世界詩学・言語学会（XXII International Poetics and Linguistics Association Conference）2002年4月4-6日、英国Birmingham大学にて口頭発表された。

• 家口　美智子　　研究題目：｢形容詞とそれを修飾する副詞との共起条件について｣

  現代英語における形容詞とそれを修飾する副詞との共起条件についてコーパスを利用しながら認知スキーマを使って新しい角度から明らかにした。

  研究成果の一部は2003年度『摂南大学紀要』に掲載される予定。

  なお、以上の共同研究の成果はまとめて単行本『変貌する英語』(仮題)として、2004年3月に世界思想社(京都)より出版を予定している。
